I have a VW Bora TDI 115bhp. It has been a good car however recently has been causing me a major headache it has started to do the following. If anybody can offer me advise it would be greatly appreciated. I have been given various possibles but nothing seems to be sorted when it comes out of the garage.

1: When i start the car up it revs up to about 3000 revs and then drops down to just above 10000 revs when just ticking over. You can hear that it is over reving. IT IS ONLY WHEN THE CAR IS WARM.

2: When i am travelling at speed on the motorway it is losing speed and restrcting my speed to no higher than 60 ish. Even when i drop it down a gear still nothing happens it does not increase the speed. Has had a brand new air flow meter fitted recently.

3: Also when i brake it makes a clanking sound.

4: When i start the car up a huge puff of white smoke comes out of the exhaust. First cold start on a morning after that it does not do it. I know that diesels smoke but this is embarressing.

I know that the carsounds like a shed and it should be scrapped but i am really struggling financially and need to keep hold of it as long as i can.

ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLLY APPREACITED!

Do a search for idle control valve, this may help

This could be 'limp mode', again do a search it could be related to your MAF. There is a how to guide explaining how to change this. search for Mass Air Flow

Not a clue, without more specific information one can only suggest the obvious, wheel bearings, bushes on suspension, damages shock.

Could be related to items 1 and or 2.

Best advise is to get the car read for faults, you can pay a dealer for this service, but if you state your location in your profile and ask nicely, then another member who is in your area may be able to read the faulst for you.

The search function only recognises searches with a minimum of 4 letters/numbers in the search field

All of the starting problems are probably caused by a faulty coolant temp sensor.

The power loss will need further investigation but as above, do a search for 'limp mode' reams and reams of info about power loss / limp mode.

Clanking brakes; could be lots of things, my guesses are though; seized caliper and pads rattling in carrier or loose calpier.

Coolant temp sensor for your warm start problem
Check your calipers for missing shims (Wor lasses vento had same probs with brake noise, a previous owner must have found it too difficult to replace the shims or forgot where they went after changing the pads, & threw them away!
