hi all, i have got about 4 warning lights on the dash that stay illuminated when driving, previous owner says a garage changed the rear pads then the lights appeared. they cleared but returned.

diagnostics report that abs control and parking brake controller - 01042 - Control Module; Not Coded.
various other faults are recorded to do with the parking brake and rear door electrics

can a control module loose its coding?

could this be caused by a flat battery? on a car thats been left standing

is there any way that i can test the abs system using vagcom without removing the unit from the car, then test the parking brake module whilst in the car? or will a fault in one control module cause a fault in another control module?

any help from would be much appreciated

    hi martin

I am going to charge up the battery today and piggy back it with a battery charger as looking at the scan I can see that when we did the scan, it only registered the voltage as 10 volts, the chap is coming back this afternoon to do another scan.

When the scan is complete I will post a full scan later today
I am also going to follow the procedure in the wiki re the rear brakes again with a battery charger connected to the battery.

The car drives fine, the brakes work 100% but i am not using the handbrake in case the fault is with the epb controller.

    thanks

It seems you have two modules that have both lost their coding. That suggests someone has done something stupid at some point. I doubt you will be able to recode the abs. You may have to go to VW for that.

hi martin, thats a fair comment, however i have read other forums where a user has a similar problem, and they have been able to input a code from a car with the same part number and it has worked.

I have found a couple of codes, but I need to find the code to allow me to change the code.

I dont know too much about the cars history so cant comment on if someone has done something stupid, I know that the battery was totally useless when i bought the car. I drove it home and the battery wasnt able to start the car the next morning.

I have a receipt from the previous owner for a cambelt change, new front shockers and other bits totaling 900 inc vat from 2010 from a vw main dealer and the car has a fully astamped service history with reciepts, i know he was in the armed forces and left the car for about 1 month and when he came back the warning lights appeared or so he says.

re visiting a dealer, i would rather buy my own vagcom kit from a uk supplier first, the car has got 10 months mot so i need to sort the problem but hopefully i will find a solution or sell it on, which would be a shame
because the bodywork and interior is a1, engine box etc all good.

just a shame about the xmas lights on the dash.

It's not as simple as that for abs system coding. You can't just enter codes and hope. Contact ross-tech direct and they will explain. ABS coding is nothing like general module coding. It uses a system related to the actual component fitted to the car. So the code from one car may not not work on another car even though everything is identical. Currently vcds doesn't support this but ross-tech can help. Access codes are available in vcds once you have your own copy.

hi martin, it may not work but its worth a try, i spoke to someone on a usa forum last night, he was rebuilding a 2007 passat, the abs unit was damaged and he couldnt get the scan info from the module,
he tried a code from another car with the same abs unit and it worked. it may not work with mine, but its worth a try. ross tech gave him half a dozen codes to try.

ross tech have got a video on you tube showing how to code abs, but i have been told that there isnt a coding table for a passat 2006 so i am not 100% convinced that the problem can be fixed. going to get a ross tech kit at the end of this month, company named Gendan Ltd and take it from there. I appreciate how complex it will be sorting the issue and using ross tech kit.

when i bought the car i budgeted for 500 - 750 to fix the problem as i thought it would be the rear brakes, probably calipers, but i will call a vw specialist on monday and see what they say.

Well i started off with loads of fault codes,

then i had a scan done and then the chap came back and did the parking brake reset and this cleared a lot of fault codes,

yesterday when the chap left i had the 01423 - Lateral Acceleration Sensor (G200), 005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation fault logged.

went out this morning after reading the info on ross tech and did the steering limit stop adaptation, had another scan done and now i just have the control modules not coded faults.

before we did the parking brake reset sequence the cruise control wouldnt work but thats sorted now as well

put a new battery on the car yesterday a bosch 05 096, the one that was on the car was only 45 amps, no wonder i had to keep jump starting the car it in the morning.

My advice to anyone with a vag group car, if its running 100%, pay to get a fault scan done and save it with your cars documentation. that way if any faults arise at least you can look back at settings etc
