My MAF was a genuine recon unit from ECP. Didn't bother with ebay for that very reason.

hmm, i think people have even had bad experiences of them. crasher always recommends one from a dealer to be certain you are getting one that works. hes a sponsor, c&r enterprises, top vag specialist and worth listening to.

Sounds like experience based advice...... you would need to call into serious question the integrity of a company like Bosch if it were to supply a different quality of item to different customers - should a genuine Bosch Maf not be identical no mater where it's come from - or are we saying ECP has been known to have knock off Chinese copies in it's supply chain somehow?

Incidentally I'll run the figures up on VCDS when I get the opportunity.

You can check your timing using VCDS in engine measuring blocks. I forget the block number but look for one called Synchro angle. If it's between -0.5 and +0.5 then your timing is good and saves you dismantling your cam belt.

Incidentally, I have an AVF avant 130 6 speed FWD and in my 6 months of owning it have averaged 38 mpg. I believe the engine is capable of more but I'm am running out of things to check!

Thanks ajrayner, I am aware if this check on VCDS - however could someone please correct me if I have this wrong? As I understand it the timing needs initially to be set with the locking pins to ensure the correct static timing is achieved. Then the three 13 mm bolts released prior to releasing the tensioner into its running position, this allowing the tension to be equalised through the whole belt, then the 3 13 mm bolts retightened prior to removing the pins. Thus removing the possibility that as you pull the pins the natural tension / elasticity of the belt under tension on one side of the sprocket doesn't pull the timing out of alignment fractionally.

The synchro angle adjustment as I understand it only comes into play as an option to re-adjust a initially correctly timed engine if the belt stretches slightly midway through the service life of the belt putting the timing slightly out again.

My concern is that the person who did the initial set up didn't use the tools and was a old school tipex and bodge merchant.

You are correct but timing can only be adjusted mechanically at the cam sprocket. Vcds is merely an indication as to whether it's good or not. Check out the link for a good explanation.

So I'm still chasing this mpg issue...... stripped the front of the car down today and fitted the crank locking plate...... But the cam sprocket pin wouldn't go in.... Released the 3 13m bolts gave the centre bolt a little twist (maybe one degree) and the cam pin has now dropped in. Haven't rebuilt it yet as while I was in there I found the aux belt pulley was knackered along with the snub mount which I shall be collecting in the morning. So would a degree or two out on the cam timing cause such a drastic reduction in mpg?

    Hi.

DId you sort this out? I've also have mpg issue. The car drives fine but mpg is as low as yours. Not my driving as recently drove BMW 2.0 same age and got 56 mpg on the same journey.

    So far I've tried:

    1. New thermostat and temp sender - now sits at 90 C
    2. two MAF sensors - no help
    3. turbo vains cleaned
    4. full service with all filters
    5. EGR cleaned
    6. different aditives

    Non helped.

I've got new set of Beru glow plugs on order. That is the last to try to help mpg on startup.

I am running out of ideas what to try next. If it stays like I will get BMW. It is realy a shame because it is a quick car (not driving it like this to get mpg). I've had B5 AVANT before with AFN engine and that was by far the best mpg car I've ever had.
