Passat 1.9 TDI 100bhp engine oil

Hi,

I'm about to do a service on a PD engine AVF, can anyone tell me which engine oil should be used.

I've looked at the 5/40 grade, the 0w/40 lists VW's on the back. but the guy behind the counter was saying the 5w/40 is better as it's a little thicker.

Any help would be appreciated.

The oil you put in these engines is critical to the engine life of these vehicles.

I recommend if unsure to go to the main dealer and buy 5 lts from them, they will tell you which is correct and it will cost approx £30.00 if your car is on a fixed service interval.

Halfords sell Castrol EDGE 5w30 oil thats PD spec oil and its 43 pounds for 4 litres. If you can ask for a trade account with them, you could get all the car parts(oil, filters, sockets, etc. ) for about 10-15 % cheaper ! Hope this helps.
