    Hi i have a 51 plate mk4 tdi 90 (chipped to 130 ish). THe car goes great but when in 4th or fifth and i floor the accelarator at 1000 - 1300 rpm there is a judder at the front until i go through about 1400 or so. In any other gear it pulls away ok on low revs. Its not a major problem but i would like to know if its a characteristic or a minor fault.

    Cheers

    The revs sound very low to be in fourth or fifth. I think you'd find most cars would struggle at that revs and being in those gears.

    Under 2k your clutch is bouncing off the flywheel as your trying to put to much torque through it at to low revs,never try and accelerate from that low down in 3rd or above or your going to cost yourself a clutch mate

    Hey,

    I'm also having that problem with my mk4 V5 Bora, i was guessing that it could be the type of fuel i put in it last time (i was km's from a decent petrol station), i put Woolworths fuel in and it has been scientifically proven that it is worse than other fuels. Also my driving instructer said that it may be because it's coming to the end of the tank and that the car has had the same tank of fuel for almost 3 weeks and dirt or grime may be forming in the tank. What do YOU think?

    thanks for the techincal explanation

    i would have thought it was common sense not to floor the car at just above idle speed in any gear..... you shouldnt be flooring the car below 2k as has been said, get your revs between 2200 & 2400, then floor it, diesels have to be coached remember, they aren't petrol engines.

    I disagree a wee bit. No car - petrol or diesel - should suffer from judder under acceleration. In my opinion it's a mechanical fault of some sort that's not acceptable. The exception being the scenario that it's under stupid load up a hill with no way for the engine to physically move the car along. Kind of a common sense realisation most drivers have that it isn't going to work.

    I've got a Mk IV PD150 GTI and had the same judder probs at low revs - disappearing around the 2k rev mark and above. I trawled around this and other forums and came across various stories and a few fingers pointing at suspects such as clutch/flywheel balance, gearbox mountings, even a disconnected speedo cable causing the prob to go away.

    Anyway, I opted for the try something cheap (ish) first before taking it to the ******** to have things like the clutch / flywheel balance examined. So, by a process elimination my first call was to the air flow sensor. I disconnected the MAF and tried driving around a bit to see if the judder was present - no it wasn't. A quick surf to vagparts and a few days later a new MAF sensor arrived in the post. 5 minutes under the bonnet swapping the old one out and ... back out for a quick test drive. The judder has gone. The car is back to it's old way of being smoother than a smooth thing with lots of pull.

    Result.

    One of the easiest and cleanest car maintenance jobs I've ever had to do with a pretty major result.

    Check out this thread;

    https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...t=12393&page=6

    We have a temporary fix for this jerking/judder which is to remove the VSS input to the engine ECM (you can actually cut the connection from the dash which is easier), to check you can remove the dash fuse #12 to see if the judder goes away, anyway all details on the above link.

    I was wondering whether this had been seen on any other application other than Audi 80 TDi. Seems to only affect the 1Z engine.
