Anti theft alarm

As a newbie to VWs, can anyone tell me how to test if the anti-theft alarm works? I've tried to interpret the manual but isn't very clear. I know the anti-theft alarm is a separate function to the Interior monitoring system and anti-tow alarm (which can be turned on by pressing a button on the drivers door and therefore can be tested) but how can the anti-theft alarm be tested?

I currently lock my car by pressing the 'lock' button once, and twice if someone is inside so that they can leave the car but keep it locked from opportunists - quite useful if I'm nipping into the shops whilst the other half wants to do her make-up!

Sit inside the car, hit the lock button on the key and wait 60 seconds or so then start waving your arms around, in particular near the roof light.
