    I have a 97 mk3 golf with a 1.9d non turbo engine...

I lost the only key for the car so I went to the main dealer and they quoted me 140 euro
To have a new key cut and coded to the car.

I went to the scrap yard and got a new ignition barrel/lock, key, transponder and ring for immobiliser

I fitted all the above but the car won't start... It will turn over but wont fire

I assume this is a problem with the immobiliser?

    Can I disable/bypass the immobiliser?

    Any help appreciated.

the immobiliser is in the ecu, so if you get that from the scrappy then it might work. you can get the immo removed but it would be cheaper to get a new key. all you need though is a key and a chip and get someone to code the new chip to the ecu.
a lot easier if you don't go around losing keys.

I thought I would need to replace the ecu also but I can't locate the ecu it is not under the filter or
anywhere along the scuttle and I haven't seen it in behind the dash either.

It's a nuisance that I lost the key alright but these things happen ha

sometimes when a person realises it will cost hundreds to get another working key, they actually make an effort and find the one they thought they had lost. sometimes they turn up in the most unusual of places.
not sure where the ecu is , someone will though.

get the ECU and you're Joe Dolan (the key transponder is paired with the ecu, as Sherlock Holmes said when he saw the yellow door "Lemon Entry Watson")

I spent a week looking for the ECU in an Audi 80, another member told it it was high up in the passenger side footwell so I'd start there
