I'm in the fortunate position of being given most of my cigars. No way I could afford to smoke them otherwise. Certainly not the ones we sell in the hotel anyway.....our prices range from 11 pounds to 3000 per cigar!

Yes...the original Cohiba Behike from 2006....there were only 4000 sticks made and all by Castro's personal cigar roller.....and no I haven't smoked one.

to me, the finest thing in life is seeing a big mouth rise up through the water and suck my bait in, followed by a lightning quick strike and its hooked.
closely followed by watching a float slowly sink.
followed by the smell and sound of a glowplug engine.

Still, cold, winter afternoons when smoke and mist settle in the hollows

The distant howl of someone red-lining a big four-cylinder bike with a short four into one

The smell of a timber yard

    The second pint

Watching a barn owl hunting silently in the dusk like a flake of wood ash dancing above a bonfire

Huge, empty, windswept beaches like those at Sandwood Bay or Balnakeil in Sutherland

Lying on the grass in the middle of nowhere with the sun on my face and only the breeze for company

Watching gannets spearing into the surging grey rollers

    Big helicopters. The coolest things

The smell of the back of my dog's neck. It's warm and comforting, like very slightly damp carpet

Reassembling an engine, and having it start first time

Those first few fat drops of rain on dry, hot ground, and the fleeting aroma of rich fruit cake that accompanies them

New car smells, both inside and outside

    Huge trees, particularly beeches

    The smell of gunpowder

    Tiny metallic beetles

The screeching of swifts late on an August evening

The smell of a garden bonfire in September

    The smell of Castrol R

Watching mewing buzzards catching thermals and spiralling heavenwards on lazy pinions

    Wrens

Old-fashioned fairgrounds driven by ERF and Foden generator trucks, the smell of dodgems and diesel, huge black cables in the grass, and candy floss machines

Standing as close as I can to a steam locomotive hissing and rumbling by the platform

Transporter bridges, like the one which used to span the Mersey at Runcorn

    My grandad's Rover 90

The hidden parts of old, old buildings, like the roofspaces in cathedrals

Bowling greens and grass tennis courts

    Ride-on mowers

The satisfying 'whomp' that comes with leaving the gas on the cooker those few extra seconds before lighting it

    Rose hip syrup

The smell of someone else's breakfast on a Sunday morning as I come home from walking our dogs

Things in glass cases, particularly stuffed birds or collections of insects

    Fob watches

Being the first to stick a knife into a virgin jar of Marmite, and running a knife under the shoulders of a near-empty jar to extract that last little bit

The rubbery, squeaky cracking of ice on puddles when you try not to break it

Waking up an hour too early by mistake, and going back to sleep

The unalloyed joy of a pee when you're really desperate

The smell of jet engine fuel

Wood pigeons exchanging smutty comments on a summer afternoon

The first star above the velvet horizon

Dirt roads in the canyonlands of Utah

    Harbours full of fishing boats

The way nuts and bolts on old ferries are covered in layer after layer after layer of paint, yet still they go rusty

    Coils of hemp rope

    Thunderstorms

Poached egg and home-made chips swimming in vinegar like my gran used to make forty years ago

    Cap guns

    Conkers

Old, overgrown tractors in the corners of fields

Using a proper map to find your way about

The smell of a train set

Putting on clothes straight from the dryer

    Cheese. All kinds

    Jodhpurs on fit wimmin, innit

Or is foresight better? sorry, didn't mean to get philosophical.

Oh yes Phutters, how could I forget the smell of a cap gun. Brings back good memories, there's nothing quite like it.

I'd like to add the smell of mineral engine oil in an old car and the sound of a snooker ball hit hard straight into a pocket.
