Hello people, just wondering whether any of you guys could possibly shed some light on a problem I've got with my mk4 1.8 20V non turbo GTI (AGN). Problem being that the engine refuses to rev past 4000 - 4500 rpm. I guess 9 times out of 10 you'd expect the fault to lie with a faulty MAF. So I went and replaced it with an exchange Bosch item from a reputable seller. However the problem was still apparent. I took it to my local garage and they hooked up their diagnostic tool and the fault code they were getting was 16497 Air Intake Temp Sensor Fault - Knowing that I had already replaced the MAF they were stumpted! So I bit the bullet and bought another sensor, this time from a different yet still reputable seller, as I guess its not entirely uncommon for an exhange item to be duff. Again fitted sensor and no change.

So the next step I did was to then check the wiring to the MAF from the ECU - connections 5,4,3,1 go back to the ECU and continuity is OK. Connection 2 is the supply from fuel pump relay through fuse 43 shows 14.2V with engine running, I presume this is acceptable voltage?

I'm now out of ideas - could the CAT have something to do with this problem as its rattling like mad. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

    Mike

I am right in thinking that with this engine the air intake temperature sensor is integrated into the MAF and not a separate sensor on the intake manifold like on the 1.8T? Had a good searched round engine and couldn't find anything that resembled air intake temperature sensor.
