My current passat (04, 140 tdi pd) gets 50 to 53 on a long run and upper 40's round town.

You won't get a long term average any where near 50mpg. I have done 25k now so well run in. Nearly all longer trips and driving sensible (70 or less on the motorway, 55 on A roads) is giving about 44-45mpg over the entire tank.

ti rich - did you notice the mpg improving as the miles increased. I am hoping for 40mpg out of mine which I hope I will get in a few months time with a few thousand miles on the clock and warmer weather.

And yours is a manual. Isn't it strange how the BM got so much more mpg yet the official figures are very similar for both?

Can't say I saw much of improvement at all during run in period. May be 1-2 mpg at best.

Indeed, my last car was a BMW (E90 330d auto) and I got within 5% of the official figures at 42 mpg. This Audi, driving the same routes I can't get within 20% and I am driving more slowly. Is it me? No!

I gave up 280BHP and a lot of fun for 2 mpg - really wish I had not bothered.

Currently have an 08 Passat, with an A6 due in April - these mpg figures are a concern. Run-in aside, if it can't match the mpg after run-in I'll be sorely disappointed. In fact I'll be incredibly disappointed.

Went on a longish trip on Saturday - 125 miles. Did the same trip a month ago in the 5er and got 50mpg. The A6 returned 37. Not good.

I do 60 miles per day round trip, 90% of which is Motorway or Dual Carriageway. It should be an easy comparison against the Passat. I appreciate quoted mpg figures are best case scenario etc however if it doesn't come close then I intend making a fuss. 5-10% out I can live with however at which point do you cry foul - the stated returns seem well off what's expected and or anticipated.

Aaaah!!! - another mpg thread has erupted!

Some bureaucrat somewhere originally set the test profile for measuring 'standard' fuel consumption figures. I've no idea how valid these tests were back in the days of carburretors, mechanical linkages and the standards of machine tooling in those days. As more and more cars have steadily acquired electronic engine management systems, and as manufacturers have become more adept at tuning EMSs to maximise their returns on 'standard' fuel tests, so they have remained 'standard' but have become less 'realistic'.

Forget the quoted numbers. They don't mean anything in real life any more, if they ever did. I don't believe there is any contractual commitment by manufacturers that everyone will achive the same mpg as is published. How one Earth would that work? The only thing that is agreed is that at one time a representative vehicle was measured according to the standard test conditions and achieved certain results. If your real life experience in any car is close to the quoted figure, that's coincidence, nothing more. For every driver who apparently gets the quoted standard mpg or better, I'll find you one who gets worse.

I know the cost of fuel brings this issue to the front of our minds, but we might as well start threads comparing how long screenwash lasts between refills, or how long your air freshener lasts.
