Don't know what the temp was in Ireland on Saturday but here in Surrey it was cold and yesterday even colder. Regardless of discussions about the impact of the auxillary heater when the air temp is low diesels are less efficient in low ambient temperature. Recently the air temp was above 10c and I noticed an improvement of anything up to 5mpg compared to when the air temp is below 5c. The EC test has to be conducted at a temp between 20c and 30c with all ancillary devices (Air conditioning compressor and fan, lights, heated rear window, etc.) turned off. Given this it is no surprise that what with the crap summer last year and the cold winter, that few of us are getting anywhere near the EC rating.

I accept what your saying, but why the huge difference between the 520 and the A6 when the official figures for both are more or less the same?

Maybe Audi did their tests in a low gravity environment

Just reading the BMW 5 Series forum, it seems that the a 520d seems to give somewhere between 43 - 50 MPG - which does not seem too far off the MPG I am getting from my A6 Avant 3.0TDi (204 BHP) - 42 MPG on urban and about 47 MPG on long motorway trips.. I would assume that anyone with the 2.0 TDi should be be getting something similar to the BMW 520d figures.....

I did notice that the MPG seems to improve when it gets warmer - when it was very cold, the MPG I was seeing was between 39 - 45 MPG... averaged on a full tank to empty...

Sounds like someone is believing the advertising too much here. Cant argue with what you were getting with the BMW, but I'm sure there are many other BMW owners who weren't getting that MPG, just as it varies on here some get loads more than others, fact of life I guess. Not sure how even doing the same journey would prove anything, the cars drive differently, have different engine/gearbox characteristics and therefore will always differ.

I currently drive a 1.6 TDi A3 and once got 70mpg out of it, but only once, because I realised it couldn't always do that in the real world. Tonight on the way home from the station I didn't beat 30mpg because it's so cold, in warmer weather high 30's on the same trip is easy, and that's with a consistent driver on a consistent journey with the same car.

Have a read around some more, average I can find for the BMW, in "real mpg" tests are 43, and for the A6 42.5. Again, your mileage will vary, no pun intended.

North of 35 round town and I'll be happy.

    Cheers,

From http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/ it would seem that the variation from claimed to real is not much different for the A6 vs the 5 Series, except that the Multitronic does seem to undershoot the claimed consumption more, but that may be due (perhaps?) to it being more susceptible to driving style than a fixed gear automatic would be

My main gripe is that on a flat motorway at 80 mph with just a little throttle to maintain the speed, the real time fuel bar/gauge is barely above 30. On my last car (C350 CDi) it was above 40.

To be blunt I don't understand how this can be the case. My car is only a week old with 300 miles on it so hopefully it will drastically improve but disappointing so far.

To be equally blunt, they are different cars and the biggest single variable in mpg in any vehicle is you, the driver.
It appears you had a driving style which produced a certain mpg in the Merc. This may even have developed unconsciously while you owned the vehicle.
Now you need to learn how to get the best out of the Audi. You can't just drive it like a Merc, BMW etc. I'd expect Audi deserters to find similar issues when transferring to whatever their new choice of vehicle is.
First of all, why are you doing 80 if mpg is such a major concern in your life? (major gripe and all that). And at a week old with 300 miles on it? Are you an engine wrecker by trade?
Learn what produces the ideal mpg behaviour first, even if it means a few weeks or months of driving sensibly and obeying the law.
Then, once you see what can be achieved, start to extend your driving style and identify which actions produce the biggest changes.
Ultimately find your own compromise where speed/acceleration/mpg/load etc are all balanced to your complete and utter satisfaction.
