There are rubber shock absorbers inside the pulley that wear away, & it starts to rattle. You can replace the pulley (£120/140 from TPS). I had the same issue, but the old pulley was so bad that it damaged the circlip recess on the shaft, & the new pulley wouldn't secure properly. For the time being I'm running with a short belt which is fine, but obviously no air con.

I'm having the exact same issues, took to garage, stated it and wasn't doing the noise! Revved it and the rattling sort of noise came on,did this several times with noise coming on and off?
he couldn't work out the noise or problem.
after an hour they decided it was the ac pump? But after looking around here and other forums I'm led to it being the pulley as mentioned here.
    Expensive fix? Part number?

If you look on German eBay you can get a pulley kit for about £80. Depending which pulley kit you need it's either £120 or £140 from TPS. With labour I guess you're looking at £200ish to sort it out.

I had the same issue.. when AC was on, the rattle went away. My AC hasn't worked for a good two years as I believe the compressor seized.. well the pulley clutch certainly failed as I was trying to look at it and eventually the clutch came away along with the rattle so I believe I just have a dead compressor.

Im trying to locate a replacement compressor.. I have the parts numbers. I wonder if Norrie might want to do a deal if, by some fluke, it's the same compressor and he doesn't want to get his condenser fixed?
