My first impressions

Picked up my new A6 yesterday, 2.0 TDI S Line Multi in phantom black. Options, heated seats and folding mirrors.

My previous car was a Merc C350 CDi with the 7G auto box.

Think I will need to get used to the Multitronic box. Seems fine when driving round town at low speeds but seems different to a normal auto when pressing on. Don’t want to put my foot down too much at the moment until it has done over 1,000 miles.

I like the ride and handling, definitely a big improvement over the Merc. Was concerned that the suspension on the S Line with the 18s would be too firm but it is fine. Does not crash as much as the Merc. Can’t say that I notice the handling differences between a rear and front real drive car.

Most other things are as expected. Interior is roomy and comfortable. Dash is ultra classy. Even though it is not as quick as my last car the power is perfectly adequate and the engine is no less refined that the V6 in the Merc in fact I think it is quieter.

My only real concern at the moment is the fuel economy. At the moment the car has done less than 100 miles. In mixed driving the average consumption (per the computer) is 35mpg. Should I expect it to improve noticeably as the car gets run in? When travelling at 80mph on the motorway with a bit of light throttle applied to maintain the speed, the real time fuel bar hovers around 30-35mpg. On my Merc (3 litre diesel) it was 40+. Revs in both cars were the same at around 2,000rpm. I would have expected around 50mpg in the Audi so am hoping it will improve.

What is the best setting for maximum economy on the motorway. Should I put the gearbox into manual and leave it in 8^th gear or just leave it in D?

I never got on with the multitronic, but thats just me being awkward. Hoping you don't reverse up many hills!

Economy will improve, the 2.0 TDI multitronic I had on loan had done 1000 miles and was averaging 42mpg over 50 miles all motorway and 44mpg over 600 miles.

The engine is still very tight at 100 miles, so take it easy and it will improve right up to hopefully 50.

The manual mode will decrease economy but if you're hypermiling, change the Audi Drive Select to Economy and keep the gearbox in D.
