Hi guys- going to adjust the inlet cam tomorrow to bring my torsion value down a bit from its current -2.9 as its always had a slight 'judder' at idle when warm.

Which is the exhaust cam and which is the inlet?
Obviously our engines are mounted long ways so its a bit for confusing for my little brain

Car drives fine- loads of low down power with a fuel consumption figure of 0.4 l/h- averages 43 mpg @ 36 mph average speed. But has always had this judder at idle.
Not planning on adjusting the exhaust cam. so is the inlet cam the one to the right or left as you look from the front of the car?

Your scaring me! Your messing with the valve timing and you ask which cam is which? If its timed correctly, as per VAG procedures, leave well alone I`d say.

Ha i knew people were going to think that! No after a cambelt change, even when locking pins are used, its a little known fact that you still need adjust cam timing as the pins are not quite as accurate as one expects. Instead of your torsion value being around somewhere around +0.5 to -1 as normal depending on the exact engine (the torsion value for your engine is often put on the white audi factory sticker label on the cam cover) the pins can allow the inlet cam to move a mm which results in a -2.9 degree torsion value as i have now. Literally a mm either way results in a big torsion value change and can result in the notorious 'idle judder' that a lot of people experience and (after they change everything possible like DMF, IP, injectors, fuel filters, etc) it is often just a slight adjustment needed using vagcom/vcds whilst you adjust torsion back to the nearer zero value. theres a how to guide but cant find it right now.

Ha its ok - i've advanced/retarded the timing of Injector pumps before(which involves undoing and physically moving the pump sprocket etc) and all other sorts of things on other cars so am handy with a spanner - my job involves overhauling gas turbine turboprop aircraft engines so plenty of spannering ability it's just knowing what is where that's all without a maintenance manual .................although i know this post doesn't make it seem that way! Just not used to twin cam as opposed to single cam thats all

So how do you adjust the cam timing?
And where on vcds does it show the torsion values?

torsion values are in block 4. Slacken the three inlet cam bolts (13mm iirc), then using an 18mm spanner (or cam adjust tool) on the centre bolt, move clockwise or anticlockwise depending on what your current torsion value is and where you want it/it should be. eg. you have a -3.9 torsion value and sticker (or if no sticker its usually anywhere between +1 and minus 1) says it should be -0.5, move 18mm bolt *slightly* clockwise to advance nearer to -0.5 degrees. Check torsion value (if you go too far block 4 will show 0 which actually can mean out of range rather than zero!). Also check fuel consumption is still around 0.4l/h or 0.6l/h- If fuel consumption has moved significantly you may have to adjust exhaust cam also.

Just checked block 4 and my torsion value says -0.5ºkw.
Fuel consumption fluctuates between 0.4l/h to 0.6l/h.
So its where it should be?

Yes it sounds in the correct range. But, each engine is different. Check the white sticker on your cambelt cover as most had the setting marked on there from the factory.
