my car often crunches when pushed in to second gear, drives well when in it however in order to avoid the crunch i change in to second gear slowly,

is my gearbox on its way out?

    it seems fine besides this.

Do you normally double-de-clutch. You may have a worn syncro ring. Is the clutch bite point normal. Regards Peter

to be entirely honest i purchased the car this way many months ago,

i do give the car a good blast but i do not double de clutch, i simply drive to high revs,

i always change gears smoothly and especially with this fault.

There is a slight judder on the clutch however bite is perfect, i believe that is not related

    what is the solution?

will gear oil change not help?

it might be worth trying a thinner oil in the gearbox,i spoke to a gearbox specialist about mine as that sometimes has slight resistance going from 1st to 2nd,mainly when the outside temp is very cold,on a warmer day its not really noticeable and he said try a thinner oil to start with,if not then if it got worse it could be 2nd gear synchro starting to play up,mines a 52 plate and done 51000 from new.

how do i change the oil? is it a mechanics job or DIY.

And also if the second gear synchro is the problem then what is the solution?

If the synchro is the problem, and an oil change doesn't fix it, it's gearbox out time, I'm afraid..

Can you get around the crunch with a bit of double de-clutching?

If you can, your wallet will thank you if you keep on doing it.

I'm assuming the crunch is when going down the gears?

If so, do the following when going from 3rd to 2nd:-

    Clutch out-change out of third
    clutch in-rev-up
Clutch out-into second (should be without a crunch)

Doing this becomes second nature after a while, and results in smoother changes even if the synchros are ok.

Still worth changing the gearbox oil though, there's loads of little, hard bits of metal sloshing around the gears and bearings....

As a confirmed "automatic-man", I've not got oily on a manual boix for more years than I care to remember, but there should be a drain plug and a filler/level plug (which are.....errr.....self-explanatory!).
Audi being Audi, there may not be. Time to look on the ELSAWIN, I guess.
remember to get the box good and hot before draining, it's very viscose and will take an age to drain otherwise.
