Im a new vw owner i have come accross from vauxhall

i now own a mk3 golf and am in process of restoring it and have got it to 90% other then this bloody gearbox problem

ive had many new parts arms clutch brakes bearings etc etc etc

buut got my gearbox seal changed as was worn and it refilled thinking it may help but still nothing

the gear box is so sloppy its crazy but the strange thing is goes into gears fine no grinding nothing never struggles for reverse the most sloppy is 1st to second and especially shifting down from third to second sometime i dont think its in it feels that loose but it allways is....

also might help if im coasting then put my foot down the gear stick moves and bounces about when its bumpy....

please help im so stuck as im on a learning curve at the moment

    its a 1.4 8v if that helps 95 3 door n reg

    thanks so much guys

Almost certainly the linkage. Most linkages wear at certain points making the shift sloppy. It's external to the gearbox so you won't have to dismantle the box. Why would you not buy off ebay? I presume the kit is a set of bushes and associated fittings.

I've bought plenty of good car stuff on ebay, but it's up to you.

I've really no idea what the job would cost at a garage. Try giving a few a ring.
