    Hi

I have my car in the garage for brake work tomorrow so will have a proper code read, but in the meantime wondered if anyone can shed any light on this fault.

It has happened maybe twice in the last 2 months, and what happens is that I put the key in the ignition, yellow and red steering symbols go out, then on starting it promptly shuts off and displays this message. On all occasions simply reinserting the key has started no problem.

Guesses are a failing steering column but I'd have expected a steering column warning instead!!

    Any ideas chaps??

Are the red and yellow steering lights off when you get the message. If they are it is probably an immobiliser warning. It usually means it has miss-read the key. Try a spare key. You may have to wait to see if it gets work. It could be a faulty key or a faulty reader coil.

Thanks Martin, I will swap keys and see what happens. This would certainly explain why it is so intermittent, but also pleased to know I still have life left in the steering column.

Is the coil part of the key socket, if so would it need coding if it was replaced?
Finally I know the keys need new batteries but doubt this would be connected.
    Thanks!

Batteries are for comfort functions of key not for starting/immobilizer. Yes reader coil is part of key socket and doesn't need coding if replaced. Sometimes the system gets upset just because you pushed the key in too soon so it never hurts to go a little slower.
