Hi, I joined here over a year ago to try and fix my car but after reading through countless threads, I am still not sure what is wrong, so any guidance or suggestions will be extremely helpful.

    So the problems are.

-Revs when idle are up and down all the way up to 2,000 and a few times have even dropped to 200 and stalled.
-Often if I put my foot down in there is no power, its like I am only touching the accelerator.
-Some times although rare, it will take an extra second or 2 to actually turn the engine on, although this isn't really a problem.
-Some days there is a lot of white exhaust fumes and a smell of petrol.
-Finally, only just found this out because of failing MOT, emissions are high, they said they were extremely high.

Had the MAF sensor changed so far.

    Thank you, for any help.

You'd need to have a diagnostic scan done first

Is that one of them readers that give you fault codes? I will get that done this weekend if that's what it is.

Yes but it's better to use VAG specific scan tools like VCDS rather than generic OBD scanners

Coolant temp sensor failure is really common, & causes the ECU to fuel incorrectly often resulting in poor idle & starting problems. Ebay OBDII cable (Ł20ish) & VCDS Lite (free from Ross Tech) is much better than generic code readers.
