    Another update. A took my car back to the garage after re-setiing all the fault codes to zero and this time it was code 17664 which came up again....which is temp sensor.
    I have to say that in my case the temp gauage on dashboard has been faultless all this time. Whether the coolant sensor has somehow been responsible for my car juddering the last week or so, I'm still yet to be convinced as I suspect my coolant sensor has been faulty for a couple of years. Anyway...I've rung VW and they have quoted me £39.40 inc VAT. VW part number 059919501A. Eurocar parts have quoted £22.50 (their part number 224440190) Manufacturer=DANSK.
    My local car dealer has quoted £15.....and Ebay is less than £4 delivered.....so quite a variation. Any recommendations?

    Absolutely fine on start up and after 14 minutes (that seems to be a common factor) it started juddering again. Pretty bad. I had lost power and the ASR lamp on dashboard came on and stayed on. I then pulled up into a layby and listened to the engine for a moment and it sounded like someone was clapping their hand over the exhaust (if that makes sense?).

    ...

    Any ideas anyone?
    The juddering and the change in exhaust note sounds like the engine maybe running on 3 cylinders ?
    Since you have an ARL (PD 150) engine installed, the associated injector number 1 fault code does suggest an intermittent fault with the PD injector loom.

    Particularly so if the fault code stored was;

    18074 - PD Unit Injector; Cylinder 1 (N240): Electrical Malfunction
    P1666 - 35-00 - -

    ( this may instead report: 18074 - Valve for Pump-Jet: Cylinder 1 (N240): Electrical Malfunction )

    Injector loom failure is often characterised by problems with the Cylinder 1 injector (timing belt side).

    My experience with the injector loom (ASZ engine: PD 130) was an intermittent problem (usually only when the engine was hot) during the earlier stages. Once the car was restarted, the problem wouldn't recur for some time. In later stages (after several months), the engine would only run on 3 cylinders with the above fault code.

    However, I can't accurately recall whether I experienced ABS/ESR light illumination.

    Just a final update since it would appear that my problem has now been solved. One of the codes was 17764 temp sensor and I bought a geniune VW replacement. It might have been faulty but when fitted it made no difference to my immediate problem. I then went back to garage and the code reader produced 18074 which suggests the injector loom is at fault (as described by tornado7red above). The garage changed this over for me and "touch wood" has behaved flawlessly since. It turned out to be a fairly easy fix in the end so thanks to all who helped here. For the record the cost was about £100 inc VAT for parts (genuine VW parts) and labour for the loom.
