I have seen a reasonable amount of comments regarding the multitronic and s-tronic transmissions. What are peoples experiences & opinions regarding the tiptronic transmission?

Well, the tiptronic solves a lot of the creep issues people discuss with the multi and you don't have the split second wait when you start at a junction so that's good. James May liked it in the Bentley on Top Gear the other week.

My personal bug bear is the kick down behaviour which we discussed in the BiTurbo thread. It's quite slow and will kick down to too low a gear, only to change up again very soon afterwards. It takes the certainty out of that over taking manuoevre that flashes before your eyes from time to time.

No one has commented on kick down for the multi tronic and s-tronic. I'd be interested in thoughts on that.

I've kind of come to the conclusion that the only way to get a good driving experience is to get a manual Porsche 911 and use the Audi purely for towing the family and stuff about.

Perhaps we should run some tests, start at 40mph, note the gear the car is in, then plant the foot and recorded what happens and how long it takes to get to 70, repeat for each MMI mode, Efficiency, Auto, Dynamic etc

    Then try it manual mode!!

Interesting, didn't RobbyG mention something about it being dependent on using the paddle shifters in a previous thread? Also there was a guy on another thread talking about his BiTDI A7 that he got re-mapped and it took all of this out, with the slight bi-product of adding 90bhp...

Do you mean it doesn't creep at all or its more of a controllable creep?

you don't have the split second wait when you start at a junction
As you say thats a relief.

On other threads it is mentioned about reverse being difficult to balance, whats your experience with this?

No one has commented on kick down for the multi tronic and s-tronic. I'd be interested in thoughts on that.
I would be interested to know what the s-tronic and multitronic experience is here too.

I think it has good creep characteristics, same as any auto box from the good old days! There are no balance issues in reverse, but I've not got a lot of reversing up hill experience as my driveway is thankfully flat!

I'm thinking about a mapping exercise, but the chaps in Holland upped their price for the 313PS engine!

Yeah i saw that, €1250 if i remember correctly, which is a bit steep for something which is only really a niggle. Would be interested to see what the difference in actual performance and economy was.

Do you have the Saloon or Avant model?

I have a friend that runs an online mapping company so might ask him what he thinks.

re. comment on kick down earlier : mine's s-tronic and I find it's best to switch to dynamic (quick pull back on the gear selector) when overtaking opportunity seems likely then kick down seems a bit pointless, there's so much mid range torque and mines only the 245 hp, what the bi-turbo must be like I can barely imagine and as for re-mapping it, yikes.

From what I remember about the thread, it was a custom job by audi tuners and they managed to get rid of all the kinks in the acceleration curve and kickdown.

This brought the car to 409bhp and about 850nm of torque. It also seemed to improve his mpg by 5-7.

Does make me think of the an episode of top gear a while ago where something with 1000nm or torque was forcefully pulling a tow truck even though they were still driving in the opposite direction...
