Well, I plucked up the courage & had a 2007 spec wheel refurbished & custom made into a RS style steering wheel. I've always disliked the skinny profile of the rim & having shovel like hands it's been a real let down on my A6.

I found a company abroad who specialise in this sort of work for a reasonable price. I opted for the same leather scheme, but with a +3mm thicker rim & a bit more padding.

The result is MUCH nicer ( I'd not say it's 120% perfect as I normally expect ). But compared to the stock rubbish, it's so much nice to hold. Amazingly the condition of the leather wheel at 50k on my A6 was VERY poor, lots of marks from rings / something... and an almost vinyl quality to the leather.

Stitching on the replacment wheel is pretty good & matches the S-line theme.

anyhow.... £310 delivered to my door is not bad, as I'd probably get that for my old wheel if sold on the net ! All you have to do is swap over the airbag & 30mins later hey presto !

    cheers

Looks good (but slightly odd) but give me one of these any day of the week.

    Off a 2013, A3 Black Edition.

but that's the thing Chris, I find that wheel you've posted well odd ! It just looks sooo skinny...

Nice though, but just not comfy... if you know what I mean....

I gues they are as much a choice as alloys...

Agreed though, it looks "sharper". My pic is such a poor quality, I'll take one from a better angle tomorrow....

Either way, it's better than what I had on there before lol !

Maybe it's just your pic, or how I'm use to the normal S-Line wheel that makes me think it looks odd, I dunno.

Get another pic dead ahead, maybe it's just the angle.

    Good mod Taz ...

I prefer the shape of centre/airbag cover of A6 steering than the circular A3 one...

Each to their own I guess ...

Taz please clarify, it reads as if you sent them a wheel to modify...or did they have one that they modded for you.

I actually prefer the lines of yours than the original as IM(not so H)O the slimmer wheel would look best on an A1/A3/A5 driven by someone with a 30 inch waist (which I have incidentally!). I think an A6 is slightly more opulent/flabby so more in keeping with the car & (in most cases) driver.

Can you clarify and also PM me the details of the company please...as buying an original wheel can be as high as £1k on Ebay!

Mark, apologies, my grammar was pretty poor last night !

Yes, they company sourced the wheel for me. I then had the choice to keep the wheel as a stock round item OR have it as they recommend ( from their "bay" shop, about 90% of their work is flat bottom conversions : excuse the pun ! )

As you've found, to buy a PROPER OEM flat bottom custom made one that is THICKER will start at about £1k if you opt for a NEW base unit. This is pointless, as my audi is a 2006. The only bit I re-use & the bit I am interested in is MY AIRBAG. They don't supply for obvious legal reasons.

The wheel they had for me was from a 2007 year ( confirmed by the time stamp in the housing, so it's ALL OEM ). To be honest I didn't ask, but they did tell me upon pressing them. They won't use anything else, thus it all fits fine. Although they didn't say how they reform the bottom, it's probably a simple case of re-rolling the lower rim flat. No cutting / welding is key here.

I attach some other pics of the wheels without the airbags ( should show some perspective from my old skinny wheel ). It definitely suits my more flabby A6 lol

Timewise, it's a 3 week turnaround, as they only make to order and then it's down to your choice of leather, stitching, colour etc....

if you are interested, I can PM you the companys details & you can make up your own mind
