By all means make a reasoned decision - but if you made all your decisions based on the bad experiences of forum members, you'd never buy any car. By their very nature, fora are places people come / post when they have problems they want solved. I for one have never posted "hi guys, had absolutely no problems with my car" on any forum. If that the case, of course, I don't post.

The A6 is a complex expensive to fix car. So is a BMW 5 series. Buy as good an example as you can get, and keep your fingers crossed! But if you can't afford £2-3k a year in normal running costs (road tax, insurance, servicing, tyres etc. but not including fuel), plus thge occasional repair, then walk away now.

Hi ya mate ... I totally agree on what you are saying... so I hope this post do not come across at aimed at you but as info for the thread...

Maybe my posts are too much personal experience... but the basis for my suggestion of not going for a 04 - 06 is really on the tech docs...

Audi would not have such docs if they were not required...

Just as we have forums full of people with issues with cars we also have a lack of all owners posting so all of it good/bad is disproportionate...

Again the tech docs IMO show that Audi must have (x) number of cars with issue for them to make the document...

Not every problem that could/does occur is made into a TPI/TSB...

There must be people that fix issues and not post? there must be people that don't frequent forums and just get on with whatever they do with their said car? that's what I used to do before but again they used to be so minor in comparison ...

If I'd been on a forum and members knew that early cars are poorer and not said and I started having issues later and was then told all the tech info I'd be pretty upset!

Anyway good luck OP on your search ... I hope you find a beaut! ...

Well I certainly have no plans on spending £3k pa!
A lot depends on how many miles you're going to do (fuel/tyres; you could easily blow over £600 pa just on rubber). Other than that, common sense prevails; many people will wander into the main dealers, because they believe it's where they'll get the best advice/service (that's certainly not my experience and personally, I avoid main dealers like the plague). But you can easily spend big bucks at an Audi franchise when there are some excellent Independents out there.
DIY of course can save even more (but you have to be competent, or it could end up costing you even more).
Just my 2c worth (and of course personal opinion; I'm sure there are some great main dealers out there).

If you take my extended warranties out of the question I have only really spent £5k on running costs over the past 4 years.

Remember all my work is done at Audi (my choice) and I buy premium tyres at £1000 for 4(again my choice) which evens out about £1.2k a year in servicing/tax/mot and any other bits and pieces I buy which in hindsight isn't too bad.

Remember my car is a 3.0 TDi so a 2.0 running costs would probably be half or even more of what I'm spending.

not too bad then I suppose. if I was to count it up id be shocked to see what I spend. I don't mind spending money on parts that I dont need ie mods, upgrades, alloys ect £200+ tax £550 insurance theres over £700 already about £85 a fortnight in fuel

I'm paying mid £300's for my insurance with max no claims and one other driver .. The joys of living in the middle of nowhere lol

I personally wouldn't touch an older car, but then again that older car you buy could go on for miles and miles and never have one problem in your period of ownership.

Bigger engine, different parts, diffs drive shafts etc are all different plus that's a Le Mans so add the 19's and all the other standard bits such as rear sensors, leather, interior light pack etc.

That car has the wrong wheels on but has the correct spare, so I can only assume they're getting refurbed.

    A rare manual version too.
