Buying a summer car?

S2000 and Toyota MR2 are the only roadsters I'd consider. MX5 & all the others are just too girly, unless you go for the higher priced ones like Merc & Jag.

I agree the MX5 is a woman's car! MR2 is a little small I think and there aren't too many about so selling might be hard.

Never seen an MR2 inside, shame it's too small as the styling is lovely. Like the VX220 & how about a kit car? Some assembly required could make it more affordable, but a friend just sold his fully built & maintained Robin Hood for about £5K and that was SERIOUS fun.

I doubt I could pick a kit car up for little money and again, probably hard to sell afterwards.

Gonna have a browse tomorrow and see what's out there, don't mind travelling for it either.

I've an MX-5 2.0 Sport. (in addition to my Audi A7) It certainly ain't girlie!

It's so good, that it's the 3rd one I've had.

It consistently won the best roadster (press) awards for donkeys years. It drives/handles brilliantly, parts are cheap. It has rock solid reliability and it is cheap(ish) to insure. You cannot say that about an MR2 or an S2000.

Get the top down, and take it for a spin on windy roads with the engine roaring - Fantastic!

I've driven all my cars on long trips round Europe and its amazing you can squeeze loads of stuff in the boot and cubby-holes. Not once did any of them play-up. Put in fuel, top up oil. That's it!

Highly recommended (by me and the motoring press).

A good place to start is with a Mk2 Sport.

The 2.0 seems to be wayyy out of my budget but looking at the Mk1, 2004 cars can be picked up for about £2000-2500.

Have you driven a 1.6? The 1.8 seems like a better choice.

Phil, never considered a 944, again they seem to be around the £3k mark which is excellent. One on gumtree 1988 2.5 (non turbo) automatic with 78k miles £2750.

One to consider so thanks for that.

Paul, I'd love something like that but that looks like wayyy more than a weekends work! Would be really fun though if it was finished.

My first MX-5 was a 1.6 Mk2. I really liked it - not much to it, and thus it drove really well. No ESP capability, which meant you could have fun at roundabouts!

And as for price - I can see a Mk2 1.6 going for £995 on Autotrader!

I'd stick with German personally which is why the 944 gets my vote... S2K is a lovely looking car though and I know I shouldn't comment on the MX5 but they just aren't for me (or any other self respecting male

).
