Passat B6 1.9tdi Steering column defective

Hi Guys,


I have just started up my car today and got a "Steering Column Defective" warning. Take to workshop. The car starts and drives fine but there is a red steering wheel lit up on the dashboard. I did a VCDS scan and some errors came up. I cleared the errors and it now works fine. But I am a little worried as I have heard the engines can just cut out and turn off while driving??

ok guys an update. just tried to start it again and the error came back. the engine also cut off. after trying a few goes it started again. and now the message visit work shop steering column defective intermittently shows. sometimes it starts fine and sometimes it displays the error.


help guys? im starting to get very worried im in for a costly bill here.

You probably need a new electronic ignition lock unit which goes on the steering column and you may need a new central electrics control module to pair with it.

It used to be a whole column was replaced but i believe just the lock can be replaced now.

It is quite a common problem on B6's. Depending on the year and mileage of your car it may be worth seeing if a VW dealer can submit a goodwill claim for it - you will need it diagnosed properly 1st though by them.

It's explained here: B6 STEERING FAULT - PASSAT

Dealer fix is about £350. They just need to change the steering column lock and recode usually. The lock won't engage when you are driving so the car is safe to drive.
