Does anyone know if the 6speed DSG gearbox fitted to the 2.0tdi engine has the "freewheel function",

as mentioned on a VW website quote "In the zero-load state (foot off the accelerator) the clutch is automatically disengaged and the engine is held at idling speed."

It is not clear if its only fitted to certain engine/gearbox combinations??

I have just been reading an article about this in the Audi Driver Magazine and in the case of the new Audi A3 you have to have Drive Select and select the Efficiency mode. I am assuming that on the new Golf VII Drive Select is called Driver Profile Selection. If so it is standard on the SE and GT models. This is mentioned in the DSG section of the Owners Manual that has already been posted in an earlier mode - page 176 Driving with an automatic gearbox.

Yes but the DSG software does a bit more than just engage neutral. While the car is freewheeling the geabox control unit pre-selects the gear which is suited to the speed at which the car is moving. This means that, as soon as the control unit tells the clutch plates to press together, the car is in the right gear for the speed it is travelling. It also ensures certain parameters are met before it will allow freewheeling such as a minimum speed of 12mph, the accelerator pedal must be in the rest position and the downhill gradient must be less than 8%. The freewheeling will stop automatically as soon as the brake pedal is used, the downhill gradient is greater than 15% and when the vehicle is travelling downhill, it achieves a speed faster than the cruise control system's set speed.
