    Hi all

I have booked my car in with a VW independent specialist to have my RCD 300 upgraded to an RCD 510 I bought from eBay. The specialist seems to think that he can reprogramme my CANBUS using VCDS and that this would solve the battery-drain problem, but I can't find any chat about this on the various VW forums to see whether it works.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

    Thanks

    Gordon

This site will explain the problem and the solution clearly
    RCD 510 | my-gti.com

, your can gateway must be at least a "K" level revision which is circa 2008, before this level, they need to be changed at a cost of circa £90. VCDS cannot reprogram the Can Gateway, VAS will, but getting a VW garage to do it will be difficult and cost as much. There is a Polish equivalent to VCDS which can reprogram CanBus moduals.
Gateways are available on Ebay and it is fitted above the foot pedals takes about 45 mins and some skinned knuckles. Good "howto available"
You will then need VCDS to reprogam it (having 1st copied the settings in the old Gateway using VCDS before removal) all is very straight forward with the help of Google.

Thanks for your very thorough reply!

Is VCDS something that many "independents" are likely to have? I will order a Revision K Can Gateway from eBay and will have a look for an independent in Glasgow with VCDS.

I assume that once the new Can Gateway has been programmed into the car, the stereo should then "plug and go"?

    Thanks

    Gordon

I think you will find that the Gateways on ebay will be a revision higher than a "K" which is good and the price is much the same they tend to be double letters now like "AA" ect. Make sure it is for a Golf.(see the part No on the attached scan, you can also see that it is a revision Q)
VCDS is something an independent may have and many individuals have also. Try on here for a "local forum member/enthuiasast" who will help you out, or the VWNavi forum.
I am about 50 miles away from you and will help if I can.
The programming is simple as it is prompt led and tick box really and all you will be doing is copying the old data over. Here is a copy of a Gateway reading by VCDS (including faults) note the software coding.

It is not complicated as long as you think about what your doing. You will not be disappointed with your RCD 510, reception and sound is magnificent compared to the RCD 300

    Hi

Thanks for your reply - I have found a Canbus Gateway on eBay for £39.99, this looks to be the correct version, with the all important K.

I will let you know how I get on with an independent, but failing that - I could always drive the 50 miles if you wouldn't mind helping me out with coding the Gateway?

    Thanks

Here is a pic of the back of an RNS 510 if your RCD is the same you need the antenna adapter as pic
Although the back is open you can see the beige twin antenna fitting of the RNS 510 and if the RCD is the same you will need the adator. RNS510 MFD3 radio antenna adapter VW SEAT RCD510 310 | eBay

Thanks to Richard for all of his assistance in fitting the RCD 510 to my VW Golf today.

A word of warning to all attempting to change the Canbus Gateway (something which I unfortunately did not achieve!), the instructions on various forums, such as RCD 510 | my-gti.com do NOT apply to cars made after MY06. It is not possible to access the Canbus Gateway from inside the car.

Rather, the Canbus Gateway is accessed from under the bonnet. A comprehensive guide can be found on the R32 forum, using the following link:-

Canbus Gateway location / removal - Tutorials and Guides - R32OC | VW Golf R32, Golf R and other .:R Vehicle Owners Club.

I am planning on using a relay switch to piggy-back the Canbus cable from the stereo to the cigarette lighter, thereby breaking the circuit when the ignition is switched off.
