If the under-shield is fitted you need to remove it, As Peter said the air-con pump is in the way when you move it out of the way starter is easily accessible. These cars ae easy to work on once you get into the zone

I have a similar problem to greenkeeper where I have a leak from the core plug above the starter motor.
    It's a 1999 1.9TDi avant AFN engine.
    I have a few questions.
Assuming I can actually get into this area with my car on ramps in the driveway, could anyone provide advice on removing and fitting please?
To remove, I've seen several articles talking of drilling / screwing it out.
To replace it, I've read pieces saying it's a tap in with a drift, and others mentioning gasket sealant so any tips appreciated.
Are there any more plugs I should be aware of as I'd maybe check them as well?
    Thanks in advance,
    Grant
