    Hi all,

OK seriously speaking, 2.7 tdi, how many miles are your front tyres crunching?

After my fiasco with the potholes over the weekend, I was told that the fronts are on 4mm now. I only got them changed 5000 miles ago!
And it seems I am changing them roughly around the 6000 miles region

Is it the Continentals at fault here? Le Mans 19" 255/35/19
I am looking at the ones you guys have mentioned in the past as my next replacement (forgot the name ) but if they're Conti's at heart, am I going to have the same issue?
I have even wear and its FWD but still...expecting maybe double would be nice! Mixture of driving (London during the week and sometimes motorway over the weekends)

Only thing I can think is the snow last week may have taken off a mm or so getting out of a carpark but even then...

    Cheers

10-12k wouldn't surprise me from a pair of Conti SC2 which I have had a couple of times before. Depends how you drive I suppose though. I don't hang around when driving & cornering, so I don't go easy on them. Maybe if I were kinder on them I could stretch that to 15k+, but these tyres seem to be designed for grip, not longevity.

I have just changed all 4 tyres on my A6. They were Conti SC2's. I got 21,000 out of this set, but they were in desperate need of changing! I safely got 18k out of them I would say. That's when I should have changed them!

I have had to opt for cheaper Falken replacements as 4 conti ones are off the budget planner this month. It will be interesting to see how many miles I get out of them.

Hmm I'm doing something very wrong in that case if I'm at 4mm already after 5000 miles.
My driving is not harsh at all given that most of it is ~20mph in central london traffic! Or is that it?

I've been very brand snobby with tyres and stuck to Conti SP3 (I think now replaced by SP5?) but at £220 a corner.... I have to say the 2.0 was better and I note both of your ones are 2.0 too

I bought my car in August with 61k miles on the clock.

The previous owner put brand new Conti Sport Contact 5's all round in May when the car had 59k miles on the clock.

I ran these until mid November (ish?) when I changed them all to my winter tyres. Car has now done 65k miles and the winter tyres still look brand new.

Will keep you posted when I change back over.

    Is it quattro?

    Has it been lined etc?

My 3.0 has done 30k on a set of Michelin PS2 tyres and the fronts are reading 2mm and the rears 3mm so due change next month or so. Will be going PS3.

A previous set of Goodyear Eagle F1s lasted 12k all motorway before needing changed.

Which part of the tyre was at 4mm or was it 4mm all around?

It could be your tyres are wearing more on the outside because of a tracking type issue if they are not 4mm all around.

How have the rears faired? Might be worth rotating?

You have my sympathy on those numbers. What pressure do you run them at? I know Audi recommend 44 psi front and 38 psi rear. I read somewhere of another Le Mans user with low tyre miles on the 255/35/19s. He switched to 38 / 34 psi and said that helped soften the ride slightly and also improved the life. Others on here might have thoughts on running at a lower pressure. I now run mine at 38 / 33 to soften the ride slightly.

5k on a new set of tyres sounds like they were made out of jelly.
I have 38 psi front / 36 psi rear with Uniroyal Rainsport 2's all round. I just got them on last weekend.
Last set I had were Hankook's and they lasted about 20k miles with 3 mil thread left. All were worn on the inside edge of the tyres more than on the outside. There was about 2 mil left on the inside.
The car was tracked and balanced (full alignment) but it still chewed through the inside edges more that the rest of the tyre on each corner. It was wearing them all equally all round though.

Ive also got a 2.7 2wd on 19's and have just replaced all four tyres. The fronts were Continentals and I only got 10k miles out of them and I dont drive it hard!!
Ive gone back to Michelins and put pilot sport 3's on (£727 for the 4 from Camskill) and the car feels much better I just hope I get a few more miles out of them.
