Hi, Newbie here, hello to all the guru's out there! I have a question that I hope you can answer for me. I have an '07 A6 SE with a 2.0 TDI BRE engine and Multitronic 'box, bought recently. Runs well apart from down a bit on top end power and mpg not so good, 39mpg over a trip to Liverpool and back from Hampshire, not good but this can be improved though. But, when starting everything is normal and ok, however, with a warm/hot engine, there is a quite pronounced rattle. This is not a rattle like two bits of heat shield or something, it's heavier than that. I asked my local Indie what it was and he told me that it was the DMF, when I then took the car back to where I bought it, (not a VW/Audi specialist), the service manager said that this car didn't have a DMF! Although I put more faith in what my Indie tells me, did this car come with a DMF or not? I have looked but can't find anywhere on the net that helps me here, so please if anyone has a definitive answer, please let me know.

Technical product information Transaction No.: 2018499/7
Metallic rattling noise from gearbox at start - A4 and A6 2.0l TDI with Multitronic
    Release date: 22-Feb-2010

    Customer statement / workshop findings
Metallic rattling noise can be heard from the gearbox bell housing while starting the engine.

    Technical background
    Two-mass flywheel incorrect.
    Production change

    Measure
Try to follow up the customer's complaint (according to the customer's description/technical background), in order to establish whether it can clearly be allocated to this TPI. Only carry out the following repair if all the given criteria (model/type, chassis number, engine/gearbox code, PR number(s), parts numbers, software status, coding) correspond exactly. Otherwise this solution will not resolve the problem and will possibly result in further repairs. In this case, we reserve the right to refuse settlement under warranty and will back bill the parts which have been removed. If the above problem is confirmed, the dual-mass flywheel must be replaced as described in the workshop manual. To avoid repeating the repair, the following points must be observed:

Check whether there are adapter sleeves for centring the engine/gearbox in the cylinder block. Use if necessary

Play at the clutch shaft is less than 0.3 mm

Thrust bearing play of the crankshaft is less than 0.45 mm

Intermediate panel between the engine and the gearbox should not be or become squeezed

Not quite true Gupsterg. The Manual has a DMF but the Multitronic has a damper quite different to a DM in the flywheel which is a sevicable item. Does it rattle at idle. Inform the dealer in writting that you have a seriuos fault and request they remedy the fault. Regards Peter

Because four-cylinder engines do not run as smoothly as six-cylinder engines, a dual-mass flywheel is used in four-cylinder engines.
I think OP got a 2.0 TDi four cylinder, I was only going by that and the SSP ...
