Hi I am new to this forum so apologies if this thread is already on.
I have a 1999 golf tdi 90bhp, I have just started to get loss of power on the car ( turbo related possibly). I have looked under the bonnet and there seems to be oil around the pressure regulating valve breather hose and also on the joint for the bit vent hose that comes out from the bottom of the turbo to what i think is the air cleaner.
Has anyone got any ideas ?
Also is there an easy way of finding a VAG garage ?

have you checked for the MAF fault mate? very common on the mk4s, do a search and you'll find threads galore, look in particular for 'bora 90bhp' its a massive thread, but theres lots and lots of info in there

secondly, if you could give us some more details about the actual fault, it would really help mate

    Hi,

The car starts and runs fine, just that there is no power (0-60 in 3 days). it takes a long time for the car to get to speed and if it goes up an incline it starts to slow down. The turbo sounds as though it is working but there is no obvious signs of a problem apart from the power loss

I forgot to mention that I have had the maf sensor off and cleaned it, is it worthwhile trying to run the car without the sensor connected to see if that makes any difference

cleaning the MAF can be very hit or miss, if you run the car without the MAF, and engine code will be logged, so bear this in mind if you run a diagnostic, as the code will come up. generally speaking, if you take the MAF off and run the car without it, you should feel the revs pick up a little smoother, although there will be very little top end power.

from what you're describing, if the turbo is working even when the fault presents, id finger point the MAF.

i'm unsure about this, if they do, it will be generic, you're better off getting a VAG specific diagnostic run, although this wont necessarily show up a MAF fault. the best way to observe a MAF fault, is to run a data logger, which involves monitoring one of the measuring blocks and you can see (once in graph form) the actual requested against the actual received value.... if there are any massive spikes or differences, you have your answer.

Thanks for your help, I have took the connection off the MAF sensor and the power is back, I just need to get a replacement sensor now.
Am I ok running the car with the sensor disconnected until i get a new one?

not really, but its probably as bad as running with a bad sensor on... ideally, you need to get a new MAF asap. try GSF or Euro car parts, theres also a very good write up on how to change the maf HERE
