I have been doing lots of reading regarding cleaning my throttle body. I have at 53 plate (Feb O4) 1.8T quattro sport (190) with a BEX engine. Most references say to use either vagcom or VCDS to do the re-alignment. I do not have the software or cable to do this myself. However, I did find this thread on a different forum & the related post underneath stating that the car can basically re-aligh itself be learning the values required. Can someone who knows what there doing in this area confirm this process? Or do I pay the garage.....

    Many thanks.

    Update from my previous posting.
    Car: 2002 1.8T PASSAT with 54k
    1) Did cleaning on the throttle body
    2) Started the engine, got real rough idling and misfire
    3) CEL shown up
    4) Left the front driver side door and hood open for 3 minutes
    5) Car learned the new throttle position or what ever it is
    6) Now car runs smooth, but CEL is on. Seems like it is some stored data.

I hope the step 4 will be useful. If you touch throttle body, do the step4 before starting the engine

Thanks for the info but I believe that these instructions are for use with vagcom/VCDS.

It won't re-align itself, that is an internet myth. You need a code read to see what is stored and the TB re-aligning in Basic Settings 060.

It's just important when reinstalling that you don't start the engine until the throttle body stops whistling (30ish secs) with the ignition on. There's no need to use VCDS adaptation for the throttle body as the ECU will adapt over a few driving cycles.
You need to get diagnostics on it. The EML/CEL may not be related to the throttle body.

    Oops just contradicted Crasher.
In my defence Ive cleaned the throttle body on a few 1.8t's & it's never made any noticeable difference if I've used VCDS adaptation or not.

Thanks for your words of advice Crasher. I had a feeling that would be the answer. Exactly what equipment do I need to do the realignment? if I we're to unbolt the throttle body & clean it can I put it back together & drive it to my local garage to get them to do the realignment? Thanks.
