    Welcome to the forum Sean.

This is a very common problem on TDI engines. You are experiencing 'limp mode'.

This is a reduced power mode, generally caused by 'boost pressure' deviating from that expected by the car.

It can normally be reset by cycling the ignition.

If you dont have any associated black smoke, the first thing to check is the Mass/AirFlow meter.

If you unplug the connector to the MAF, and the car runs a little smoother or 'the same' or better, clean or replace the MAF.

You can clean it by spaying a residue free solvent (carb cleaner) at the probe inside.

If it is a Bosch type i would just get a new part.

The MAF is on the intake for the air filter box.

I need to disconnect mine also on my A3 but I don't know how to remove the connector as it has some sort of strange clip??

The probe is held in with either 5 point 'security star' screws, or 6 point 'security torx' screws. (the security part denotes the middle post/hollow bit)

Thanks for that, I did notice the security star screws but thought that their may be another way to disconnect it. I think I have got some of the keys so I will try tonight.

    Thanks again.

If you are replacing the complete MAF (not just the probe) it bolts onto the airbox lid.
