Passenger Door – Water Leak

Hi All,


I have had my 56 plate Passat Estate for around 2.5 years now. I noticed around 2-3 months ago water was forming on the sill of the front passenger door. It had never leaked before and the water wasn’t getting into the passenger foot well as the carpets were always dry so I didn’t really bother about it.


Recently larger puddles of water are forming and in the odd occasion water makes its way into the cabin, however in small amounts as the carpet is never really soaking wet. I checked all the other doors and their sills are bone dry. I popped the door card off the other weekend and I could see that the water was coming in from around the speaker seal. See attached photo.



With the colder weather coming in I am worried ill have issues with condensation forming inside. Also there could be issues with the door seal getting frozen to the metal working leading to issues getting in/out the door or ripping the seal. Please feel free to say if I am making a mountain out of a mole hill! Since the cabin carpets are not getting soaked maybe I should just leave alone?


I checked the door drains points and they are clear. Tonight I poured water directly onto the front passenger doors window. Water started to pour out of the door drain points quite freely as expected. When I opened the door a few minutes later I could observe the water dripping out from the bottom of the speaker housing as seen in the previous picture.

Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening? I wasn’t sure how to proceed, any help offered would be much a appreciated.

Take the door plate off and reseal. VW do a sealant but siicon sealant will do as long as you don't plan on taking the plate off again.

Also lift the plastic scuttle panel a bit by the wiper arms on the drivers side and check you aren't gunked up by the drain.

Thanks for the responses to date. I had removed the plate from the door in the past and resealed using a well know brand of silicon. This stopped the water from leaking from the door plate but presented a new problem. The plate has a tight seal all the way around and no water is coming from here however water is now dripping out the bottom of the speaker housing on the door. The speaker housing is riveted on to the door plate and at the lowest point on the speaker housing water is seeping out.


I think I’ll have to drill out the rivets and bed the speaker housing in silicon too!


When I pour the water directly on to the front passenger door window only the water comes out of the speaker housing.

The door isn't full of water by any chance. Are the holes at the bottom clear. It's strange water is leaking round the speaker.

Hi Martin,

The two drains at the very bottom of the door are clear :-( I stuck a screwdriver up each hole and had a poke around to ensure there was nothing blocking the drains. When I have the door open and pour water on to the outside of the window the majority of the water comes out the drainage holes at the bottom of the door.

The water is dripping out the bottom of the speaker so it must be pooling somewhere on the speaker. I think either the door plate needs to come off, which I don't want to do as I just selaed it recently with silicon, or ill have to drill the rivets out and pop the speaker off. Maybe by diing this I can see behind the plate and get to the source of the problem.

I have never had any issues with the door until recently and I have not had any works carried out in or around that area :-(

I am contacting you to see if you could provide some assistance in solving this issue. My after market speakers were destroyed and I am not very familiar with where the leak may be occurring.
