Hi guys/galls, I know airbags can be a pain in the butt & I know you have to be careful with them (interior fan done on Passat B5 before). I need to take my steering wheel off (it's p**sed & annoying me now). When I start the van, the airbag light comes on for a few seconds, I'm presuming its sorting itself out, so if I don't start the van is it ok to remove the steering wheel cover with the airbag, without upsetting the whole system. What I don't want to do is sort the steering wheel out, then end up with a fault on the airbag & have the warning light on all the time, as this will probably annoy me more than the steering wheel currently does.

    Cheers for your help

The airbag light comes on as it's doing a self test. To remove it disconnect the battery and leave it for 15 minutes, then do your work. Put it back together turn on the ignition THEN reconnect the battery while you're outside the vehicle. The airbag light will need to be reset with VCDS

Cheers Doctle Odd, think the steering wheel will be staying on slightly wonky then. At least until I need my mechanic to come round for something else, then I can do it & get him to reset the light. It's running like a dream at the mo, so won't be anytime soon, hopefully.

If I'm driving a car and the steering wheel isn't centered I find myself trying to center it whilst driving, which is frightening for Mrs Odd if she's a passenger!

Hahahaha sounds like fun. I'm presuming the removal & refitting is going to be the same as a Polo, so therefore the same as mentioned in this post. If it is, then the steering wheel's staying as it is.

has the steering wheel been removed and put back wrong, or does the tracking need doing. if its not been off then don't just put it back on straight as that will make doing the tracking a pain, but instead go to a garage and get them to set the tracking and at the same time straighten the wheel out.

Not sure if its been off, only bought it in July, but checking old MoTs its had some work done on the front suspension (can't remember what). Tyres seem to wear well across the whole face, so presuming tracking can't be out too much, also drives ok, nice & straight whilst I drink tea & smoke the wake up fag in the morning. Well I haven't ended up in the Medway yet. But will get it looked at, think the steering wheel can stay where it is, it doesn't annoy me enough to spend money on it.

    Cheers
