Hi all,
I'm Chris, I live in Bury St Edmunds, I've recently bought a Type 4 Transporter, coachbuilt camper, and have so far divided my time between going away in it, and laying underneath it carrying out various servicing issues. I am a keen do-it-yourselfer but am in no mway an expert. I've bought two manuals for my 'van, but have found neither of them has much detail beyond simple servicing.
My 'van is a 2.0l petrol, rare for a camper. Anyone out there know the 2.0 petrol engine at all? It's fuel injected, I know that much, and 85bhp - it's certainly quite underpowered but hey ho! Although she was registered in 1996, I think she was probably made at the end of '95 as she has rear drum brakes, I have read that all Transporters have rear discs from 1996. D'Oh!
I wonder if anyone can help me with the following questions!
I tried draining the water system completely, but out of 10 litres, only 5 came out. The manual suggests using the bottom hose, which I did, and the drain plug - the respective illustration is a typo though so I'm still none the wiser where the drain plug is! Since changing the anti0freeze, the temp has risen more than before, possibly due to a mixture of anti-freeze solutions now, possibly because there's a small air pocket somewhere. Where is the drain plug please?!
How easily can rear axles be swapped, ie one with discs? I'm not sure it's worth the hassle, but worth an ask.
How practical is it to swap the engine for a diesel? I wonder if it would make a huge difference, and the cost would be substantial I'm thinking!
The manuals recommend changing the cam belt at 60,000. Anyone suggest it should be done sooner than this? My 'van's mileage is 34,000, I was thinking of changing it at 50,000. The van is 11 years old though, so maybe a change sooner than that would be an idea?
Many thanks anyone who can offer some suggestions. Hope to chat with some of you sometime...
