You should buy a 2009-onwards model as the 2.0 tdi was changed to a common rail unit which i believe are far more reliable than the older pd models.

Don't forget about the über reliable 1.9 TDi - makes a good little car if its remapped and you won't be plagued with faulty injectors, oil pump's etc.

Oil pump issues on the A3, dont know about that mate, A4's had issues with the pickup/balancer, so afaik you'll be ok, but the newer the better I'd say, 140 is pokey on the CR engines & no dpf afaik, 170 is dpf & earlier ones have had injector recalls which have been a nightmare for some.

I havnt heard anything about the A3 on this particular issue, the A4 I read almost everyday, but like I said go for facelift 140 CR as earlier 140's had few issues & the earlier 170's people didnt like the dpf issues & injector recalls.

Oil pump issue for the PD engine is when it's longitudinally mounted (ie A4 etc.). Transverse mounted engines (ie A3) don't have the weak point.

As mentioned DPF is a common annoyance for all PD engines with them unless you do long runs - can't remember when they came in but my 55 reg doesn't have one so no problems for me there.

The 170ps PD engine has a known problem with injectors - finally subject to recall though so this should be fixed/fixable for free.

ABS ECU sensor is another weakness of most of the PD engines (and several other manufacturers), I've no idea if the CR engines have the same thing, but I'd go for one if possible due to the reduced emissions and smoothness (if you do have a DPF then the fewer the emissions the better.)
