Hi M is a BKP diesel.

    Further updates.
After Plugging in my VCDS i’ve managed to pull the faults up which did not happen last time.
Cleared it and after the problem happened again it was the same faults logged.
I've measured the engine block and can confirm the temp sensor is within range 80-86c from stand still so I can rule this one out to be the problem.

Hopefully you kind chaps could tell me if indeed it is a faulty camshaft sensor and how easy it is to change.
    Fault codes below.

012296 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Signal Out of Range
    P3008 - 006 - Short to Plus - Intermittent

000833 - Camshaft Position Sensor (G40): Implausible Signal
    P0341 - 006 - Short to Plus - Intermittent

    Thanks

Has it had a cam belt? If it has I would check the timing with the pin and plate. If not it may be a good idea to change it when replacing the camshaft position sensor as to remove the sensor the toothed belt must be removed from camshaft pulleys and the idler roller must be released.

The cam belt was changed around 60k mark.. i'm now only on 85k. this was changed around 2-3 years ago so it did not happen recently.
I'v had a quick look around, and i believe you can check the torsion value of the timing belt with vcds engine measuring block group 04 and should be in the range of 0-0.5 for passats. then i will know if the timing belt is also faulty rather than the sensor?
    Thanks

If the G40 sensor is not working correctly VCDS will not show the correct value anyway as this sensor is used to calculate the value, the only way to check is with pin and plate.

    Thanks crasher.
I'm guess it might not just be a sensor as if the car does not start when hot then it could be a cambelt becoming frail even after 25,000 miles?

G40 is coming up for a reason, the most common reason I see is misaligned valve timing.

Do a couple of starts and read group 051 each time and see what you get. My money is on the cam sender failing.

just wondering if the camshaft position sensor is easy to get to on my BKP engine?
i saw on other models you just take of the engine cover and then the clip cover for the cambelt and its there..

Is this the case on the BKP engine?
    Thanks

    Update:
took the readings at group 51 as mentioned.
    14:58:18 Group 051
    800 /min RPM
    400 /min RPM
    255.0 (no units)
    00000000 Bin. Bits

On the face of it.. its looking expensive now as if its the cambelt sensor, then i need to change the cambelt and water pump too.. and the engine is also leaking oil around the vacum to the plastic manifold.
I presume i can change the vacum and not the manifold, but looking around it seems like i have to change the manifold too?

    thanks
    Tempster
