    Hi Folks

I am having a problem with the offside front wiper on my 2004 Touran 2.0tdi. The wipers work to a certain degree when there is enough liquid on the screen to lubricate them but the drivers side goes into either manic flapping or parks against the A pillar if it is to 'dry'. The big issue is that when you really need to clear all rain ie at night there isn't usually enough rain to prevent this happening. The thing that baffles me is when it goes nutty it obviously can move at great speed so I don't see why it goes out of sync with the nearside wiper in the first place. I can reset them by turning the wipers off and then holding the quick wipe function (stalk down) until they shuffle and get themselves right again.

Hoping someone can shed some light on this as I know the opposed wipers are a nightmare. Also if I do need a new mechanism would it be possible to fit the Mk2 Touran conventional wipers to avoid any future issues.

    Thanks in advance.

Took the whole assembly out today and noticed that the two stop tabs had been worn away. This has meant in the past the linkage has been able to rotate fully rather than doing its limited sweep, so much so it had worn a hole in the bulkhead plate below the sound proofing. I have ordered a new mechanism from the ******** for £72+vat and hopefully this will fix it. I'm hoping that the extra speed on the higher rate wiper settings had been causing it to skip over the stop tabs and confuse the smart motor.

I just got a 2010 Touran to replace a 2006 model and I have ended up here while investigating the possibility of changing from the parallel system to the opposing. I wanted to do that because the parallel system leaves such a large area of screen unswept.

I have had a 2004 model Touran as well and never had any problem with the opposing system in 8.5 years of motoring. So don't change to the new system because its crap in comparison.

I had an '04 Touran with the opposing wipers and upgraded to a 2009 model later on with the parallel wipers. I understand that they kept the opposing wipers if you had rain sensors, and so they should be interchangeable even on the later models.
To be honest though, I just got used to the new wipers rather than faff about. I had more issues to deal with on the car anyway (turbo replaced@58,000 miles, DMF replaced@59,000 miles). So much so, that after 12 months it got replaced with a Passat Estate!
