    Hi, Newbie here!

my 2006 1.9tdi VW Touran cut out today. Just before the engine died, there was a brief whinning noise and then the power cut off. No warning lamps have lit and the engine still turns over. The AA came and ran their "Tomy" diagnostic, (as the mechanic called it), but it did not bring up any fault codes or live data. He suggested that the engine seemed okay as it sounded fine when it turned over.

AA suggested it could be the fuel. He took the inlet pipe off and was going to spray something into it to see if that would help kick it into life, but did not as there was a small amount of smoke coming out of it, which he had never seen before. Any thoughts? he did say his diagnostic software was crap and the VW software would probably pick up more info.

When you turn the ignition and the engine turns over, eventually the oil pressure warning light comes on and the message "oil pressure engine off" appears. There is oil in the engine, (slightly below the min level).
    any thoughts please.

I have had this car for 2 years without a single problem, this is the first breakdown i have had and am gutted! It's done 81k and had its cam-belt was re-newed at 60k miles.
    Cheers,
    Ian.

    welcome.
with any vag car, if it doesn't start you get an oil warning, so thats nothing to be concerned about.

They do not have a fuel pump control unit like the FSI petrol engine. Firstly it needs a proper code read and then it has to be established if the engine will run using a spray up the intake which he was about to do before he chickened out. This proves the mechanical integrity of the engine so you then know where to start looking.

Nice one. My mate is coming round in the morning with his VAG com software so we can run the proper diagnostics. Hopefully it will bring up something that is not going to put a massive dent in my wallet. Fingers crossed!!!

it will be interesting to see whats up as they are pretty reliable engines and not a lot can cause them not to start. the worrying thing is the whinning noise before it stopped. when you crank it, does it sound like an engine trying to start, i.e. can you hear the compression strokes, or does it just spin over in one continuous spin. (really hard to describe in words ).
at the moment, my bet is a timing belt problem, due to the whinning , but i really hope for your sake i am totally off the mark.
as crasher said, a whiff of easy start to see if it runs on that would prove or disprove it.

How do you describe that way they turn over when the belt has gone? It is so hard to describe, if you have heard it you know it the next time straight away. The way this symptom can catch you out is if the V157 inlet manifold flap sticks shut, it gives the same loss of compression constant whirring noise rather than the pulsing beat of an engine with compression.

Right, here is the latest. My mate came around, ran the diagnostics and nothing obvious came up. The timing belt is still in one piece, so thankfully it is not an issue. After a lot of tinkering he eventually got the engine running, but only with the hose to the left of the EGR removed. as soon as it is re-connected, the engine stalls again. There does not seem to be a blockage as you can blow through one end and feel the air coming out at the air filter end. There is also a lot of pressure when you take the oil cap off when the engine is running.

My bud is going to investigate further and hopefully add some comments on here as he is a member already, but any further thoughts to help would be appreciated.

So glad it's not the timing belt though!

And as Ian has said, we got the engine to start but only when the inlet hose to the EGR is disconnected.

As soon as the hose is put back on, the engine stalls like there is a blockage in the pipe.

Checked the air filter which was clean and disconnected the MAF which made no difference.

Did notice that with the induction pipework open at both the filter and the EGR ends there was alot of air flowing through the pipes with a fair ammount of smoke, didn't check the turbo but I assume that if that was broke it wouldn't cause it to stall.

The engine seems to have alot of back pressure building up and when the oil filler cap is unscrewed it is forced off by the pressure (alot more than my 2.0 tdi)

My thoughts are that maybe the crankcase breather is not working properly but why would the engine stall when the induction hose is connected bak to the EGR?
