well, dunno if this normal but the exhaust pipe that connects to turbo, it has a 2" flexi piece that connects to the cat with a round bar welded on in a spiral.

i noticed that the flexi part was sooted up, is this normal or is it leaking, will take a picture when i get chance but surely it should not have black soot on the outside ?

Clean it off and see if it comes back. If so it's leaking, if not something was spilled on it and it's turned to what looks like soot.

Not really since the turbo is the largest restriction in the system and it's after that. If it's not noisey enough to annoy you and the soot doesn't come back immediately then it might be repairable before it gets too bad or you might get away with putting it off for a while until it becomes noisey enough to replace. As long as there isn't hot gas pouring out on to something then you shouldnt have any problems that I'm aware of!

Also...check if the gas is coming out of the flange between the turbo and exhaust. This might have a gasket or might be seated badly,in which case it should be an easy repair. Sorry I cant help more, never really looked at that area.

It is a cheap enough fix easy to do at home. It could fail MOT as well plus you don't want diesel fumes getting into the cabin.

Right, my car told me this morning its due for a service in 1700 miles......i did service it when i got it( few months ago ) so will change the oil and filter again in the new year

BUT, i plan on removing the turbo and stripping and cleaning, now i undo the oil feed pipe( after draining oil) thats ok but i read some where you have to PURGE the pipe......what does this mean exactly, leave the nut open a bit and start engine after oil put in to get the oil through to the turbo ??????

Purge isn't the best word to describe cleaning all the crap out of the pipes. Don't run the engine with the turbo oil pipe slack, fill the turbo up with new engine oil tighten the pipe and let the engine run for a few minutes before driving it
