Had the car serviced recently and was told there was 20% left on the pads. The warning light (and loud sound!) comes on now, but I'm in the back of beyond in Scotland. Realistically how far can I travel in this condition?....i wanted to get some fancy Redstuff pads fitted but am thinking I may have to make do with something cheaper just to get me home!...

I'd drive carefully if i were you. In other words- i'd attempt to drive back home. DO NOT brake hard, try to slow down using gears. Should do the trick.

... someone with more experience should answer... i know... ill shut up ...

Back of beyond in Bonnie Scotland ? Your in Gods country man !! Anyway look in the wheel and you will see the pad. It all depends how you drive your car in how long you have left. If you get to Inverness , Stirling , Glasgow , Edinburgh then change them if your worried.

Metal on metal will ruin your disks and metal on metal makes a poor brake especially in an emergency. My advice don't drive it and get a set of pads.

Warning lamp in dash panel insert will light up when wear limit 3 to 4mm is reached... depends on your PR codes for brake setup...

You can see some tech data here... Link:- Brakes

To get the brake PR codes see your car data sticker in wheel well/service log book...

1000 miles would not be an issue. However, check the fluid level in the hydraulic reservior. Regards Peter

That will be handy, I'll take it steady and get some nice Redstuff popped on.
