    Hi Guys,

I need to remove the alternator from my 2000, 1.9 SDI diesel because the pulley is shot. (At least it looks like it's got to come out, there aint much room down there and I cant see where to go next). I got a pully and removal tool ready.

Could someone please give me a sequence of what bits need to come out cos everything is in the way of the alternator. Is it a pig of a job?

So far, the car is on ramps, belly pan is off, enging cover is off and belt is removed and battery disconected. Futher help would be greatly appreciated.

I think you will have to remove the lock carrier or at least pull it forward on long bolts. Thats what I had to do on a 1997 Polo. Not too difficult, remove bumper and then the carrier that holds the radiator etc is removed or long bolts are inserted and the carrier is moved forward. Once out of the way, you will have a clear run at the alternator bolts.

Scampy, thanks for the idea but removing the lock carrier on this model, 6n2 yr 2000 wont give any more room although a better view of proceedings. I spke to Marin earlier. The1.9 adg unit is a big lump and the only way get the alternator out without risking getting it jambed is to remove the power steering pump and everthing else. Then i got to find bolts holding the bracket to the block. I found some, i just hope i aint got to move the diesel pump. The job is a nightmare and i'm getting on for 60; far too old for scrabbling around on the floor. Wonder if santa has a 2 post lift and a sonic screwdriver in his sack?z

    Hi
Problem solved. The alternator will come out from under the car. The engine needs to be lowered a small amount to get long alternator bolts out. Plus anything in the way has to be taken off. Pas pump, plug, wires from alternator short water pipes from oil filter head etc etc.

The engine needs lowering a bit too so alternator bolts clear belt tensioner and car frame.

Thanks for advice Martin and Scampie.
