Although it may have been serviced in April, the pads may have been 60% worn then. The usage by yourself may have put the brakes close to metal.

See about getting a free brake check somewhere - or a free EVC at VW.

When did this noise start? Does the noise happen all the time under braking?
Was this full service including change or check rear brake pads? If so, were the pads changed by main dealer?
Does car pull to left or right when braking?

Take the wheels off and check how much meat is left on he pads, they're down to metal if they grind only when braking...

It's a long shot but I had a similar problem with the rear brakes of my my Golf two years ago. It turned out to be a stone trapped between the disc and the backplate. Pads looked fine and because the disc is smooth plus the stone was flat sided it took several days of frustration and noisy brakes to figure it out.
