    Hi Folks,
New to the forum, but I seem to have a big problem. My Golf 1.4 tsi (Mk5 2008) recently developed a front end noise which at first I assumed was a wheel bearing needing attention. VW garage informed me that it was in fact a differential bearing in the gearbox (DSG). Gearbox is a sealed unit (WHAT!!!) and cost to replace - £4,500! All this for a GKN bearing costing no more than c.£50.
Anyone else had a similar problem.

    HAPPY CHRISTMAS

Dont despair DSG G/Boxes can be stripped and rebuilt, albeit by a specialist. Elsawin has the procedure in detail.Clean room and special tools required.Hope you find a more cost effective solution. Suggest contact VW HQ at Milton Keynes.. Good luck Richard

Thanks Richard - relieved to hear that, but why does my local VW agent say it cannot be done?

The parts are not available from VW, if the parts can be found they can be repaired. I imagine the bearings are proprietary but the seals could be a problem as could any shims required.

Been away for Xmas. I bet he has not had this to deal with before and is just being too lazy to find out. As Crasher state's some parts could be difficult to obtain. I have a friend well up in the VW management. I will ask the Q for you, but as it is the holiday period it might take a little time. Just had a look in ElsaWin and it is somewhat vague in this area (Ver.3.7) but enough detail on changing the oil seals on the drive shafts is present and the clutch friction units.
Search the German sites as well as the UK for possible exchange service availability.

Yes there is massive detail in ELSA but ETKA shows virtually no parts being available, literally just the Mechatronic unit, clutch and a few odds and sods.

Yes elsawin has the detail and some guidance, but the special tools and resetting is way beyond DIY and even a part exchange would require a VW diagnostic machine and the special DSG set up prog. from what I can glean in ElsaWin, so sorry to put a dampner on your hope's, it looks like a very exspensive job.I will still ask my VW contact for Milton Keynes veiw on the matter as I own one myself.
Clutch linings and drive shaft seals seem the only bits that can be done by the Vw franchises but the resetting is massive if the G/box is removed. Crasher has confirmed this and he is well in the know.

Hi sorry that it has taken a while but here is a really good video of changing a 7 speed DSG clutch and the source of spares and special tools cost seems to be around 600 Euros plus labour

Things have changed a lot since then, LUK now make the kit and tools available as well as in depth technical info and I went to a technical evening held by them about the DSG 7 speed.
