    Hi All,
My first post but a browser for a while.
In short I currently have the A4 Avant 2TFSI Quattro Black Edition, and the same as several posters on this forum MPG if a bit of an issue, I am currently averaging 28 MPG (mainly motorway, but I like 2nd and 3rd gear on the way up to speed). My old employer gave me a fuel card so was in the fortunate position of not having to worry whether the car did 5 or 50 to the gallon.
I've now changed jobs though, where I get my business mileage paid back to me so looking at something with a bit more economy, but not with too much drop in fun!
Obvious choice is switching to an oil burner, though not sure of 2 or 3 TDI Quattro? Stats seem to suggest that there is little difference in MPG between the two, but just after some real world feedback on either model. The new (late 2012) 3 TDI seems to have improved economy.
    Many thanks for your replies

We have the 'old ' 3.0 TDI 240PS S-tronic and I have averaged 39.7mpg on the DIS over 10,000 miles. This is a mixture of about 70% long motorway trips and 30% local. On a cruise at 60-70 it will show 45-47mpg. The DIS is about 5% optimistic.

The new facelift 245PS engine should be at least 10% better if you believe the figures. The new 2.0TDI Quattro S-tronic (on paper) is only about 2-3mpg better.

Its also quite quick... The S-Tronic works well giving seamless instant changes, not quite as good as a torque converter auto in stop start traffic.

If it is motorway miles you are doing, and still want fun, go for the 3.0. You should get 40-45 mpg on long runs no problem. But I would expect it to be a lot less on town driving.

I'm going off the fact my dad has a B7 3.0 TDI manual (wish it was auto) and I have a B8 2.0. And fuel between them is not massive either to make me want 2.0, but the actual cost of the car was too much for me so went for 2.0

I've got the 3.0TDi. How you drive it is a major part of it. If you take it easy and relaxed, you can get a good MPG out of it. Average between 35-40MPG (Circa 400 Miles per tank), and I drive a mixture of town/short drives and A-road driving. Plus when you want to have a bit of fun..the power is there!

Thanks for all the replies, much appreciated.
Any 2 TDI Quattro owners out there with real world MPG's?

    Hi Boom1
I have a 2.0 170 TDI Quattro black edition (manual gearbox)
    Round town 28-34 mpg
Motorway 38-44 (30 miles trip) although on longer runs have managed 49
Currently running 18's with winter tyres which gives around an extra 2mpg suggesting the gearing is better suited with 18's (slightly smaller circumference) over the factory 19's fitted to the black edition.

If I was doing it again I would opt for the 3.0 as car does bog down a bit when say entering a roundabout in 1st gear making you think twice about an upcoming gap

Thanks for the reply, doesnt seem to be huge difference in the MPG then!
The sensible part of me (the Mrs! ) was thinking that if the 2 TDI returned a significant improvement in MPG over the 3 then that would be the way forward.
    3 TDI it is then.
    Cheers again to all replies.

Switching cars for fuel economy is a false economy.

Work out your annual fuel cost for each car and then tell me if you could change cars for 3 times the difference (i.e. 3 years savings).

You'll need to be doing big miles to do so especially when you factor in the new car's higher deprecation.

I've never driven the 3 ltr but have had plenty of 2ltr courtesy cars. Performance wise the 2ltr do nothing for me. Suprised at your mpg figures; I get around 38 mpg...42 if I take it easy.

My colleague was taken out for a ride in his mates 3ltr A5. He said it felt as if his face was being ripped off during acceleration. He's got the 2.0T golf GTI!
