An odd thing has started to happen - When I'm in 4th and 6th and the car is under "load", ie is I'm accelerating or simply cruising, there's a clattering or crunching or grinding noise. I can hear it when I accelerate more, but it's noticeable when I'm cruising - the problem is worse in 4th but the noise is definitely there.

The noise is not there in any other gear, but I'm not sure if I can just hear it in 3rd, but I might be projecting the noise - The engine sounds fine and there's no other sign of any other problem, so I can only suspect the gearbox. I'll go to the dealer tomorrow for their denial....

    An update.

I've been in to the dealership and they have confirmed what I feared. It's a "gearbox out to investgate" job - they don't really suspect the clutch as the problem is only there when I'm in 4th and 6th.

They did say something that I wasn't sure of - they suggested that the problem might be with the dual mass flywheel - which was odd as I thought (and said) that was DSG only.

Anyway, they've had it up on the ramp and confirmed there's no gearbox oil leakage but did ask if I heard a "clunk" when I started the car as they heard something along those lines.

It's in on Wednesday as I need the car tomorrow (it still drives fine for now) for the strip down. I anticipate being carless for about a week

Can't see it being the DMF if the noise only occurs in the 4-6 gears . Sounds like the box as the even no gears are all on one shaft . However if the DMF is not broke next week should sort it !

The clutch and flywheel are apparently at fault and on order for replacement tomorrow - however, VW are recommending a gearbox strip down to the lease company which sounds a little speculative to me

New flywheel has been ordered but a full gearbox stripdown wasn't authorised - I might have the car back tomorrow....

Agreed. Surely if more investigation into the gearbox is needed, why are the DMF and clutch being faulted ?

I'm not convinced it's the clutch as it's only in 4th and 6th. We'll see....

Common lies told by dealers - "it'll be ready by (insert date/time)" and "we'll call you" - if they'd just told me it won't be ready by Monday, I could have sorted a hire car. Grrrrrr.
