Changed the glow plugs, ones came out had VW stamped on them, replaced with Bosch long life ones(£10 each).

Now with the cold mornings the heater light only stays on for about 1 second, start car and it struggles, seems like misfire, if i turn the key 2-3 times and start, its starts ok.....

is the relay on its way out or is that normal, can i test them whilst in the engine ?

Wait about 10 seconds after the light goes out before cranking. The glow plugs are still operating for a short time after the light has gone out.

I don't know what car you have, but mine's a 1.9 TDi 100HP 2001, and when it's really cold ~2C the glowplug light stays on for ages and when it goes out, the car starts on the first revolution. After that, even a quick trip 500 yards to the local supermarket is enough for the glowplug light to only come on for a second (if that) when restarting, and again the car starts instantly.
