I have replaced many a sump plug washer over the years but never the whole plug! Is this a new thing?
I was a vag trained tech all be it 15 ish years ago. And we didn't replace sump plugs then, just a washer @ 22p iirc

Speaking of getting parts for the best price on parts go to your local motor factor, that's where local independents garages get there parts. So they are tested to the same specification as OE.

it depends if the thread is 100% perfect on the bolt you take out. if its not because its stretched and you didn't measure it then it will destroy the thread in the delicate aluminium sump which will then cost a lot more time and money than just replacing a simple sump bolt. how many threads are started by people who have a wrecked sump thread and need to find out what to do about it ? all these are because the old bolt was re used.
so, in conclusion, yes, its good practice to replace the bolt and stating it shows a lack of knowledge actually shows that you know nothing on the subject and are not qualified to make that statement to my learned friend.

you would seriously replace a sump plug?

do you replace the valve everytime you inflate your tyres?
do you replace the cap everytime you refill the window wash fluid?

a sump plug is made from solid metal and is designed to be reused over and over again.

would you use new wheelnuts everytime you changed a wheel?

you are all proving your lack of knowledge on car maintenance

sounds like some mechanics trying to justify their inflated costs,

no wonder there's no faith in the automobile service industry, if the public are being mislead to think a German engineered Bolt cannot be removed by a competent person and replaced without causing damage to the sump.

this isnt a M2 mecano bolt, which can also be used more than once

I possibly think most sump threads are ruined from over zealous tightening.

I've never cross threaded nor over tightened a sump plug,

if a person couldn't manage the replacement of a bolt without these skills,
then they shouldn't be working anywhere near a combustion engine.

If the sump plug was replaced, would that stop people over tightening?

Would you re-use stretch bolts? chewing gum? a gasket? a condom? some things are DESIGNED as single use.

    You smell like a troll.

I'm not sure how a part that costs a couple of quid at the most is "inflating costs". Anybody who cheaps out on consumables shouldn't be allowed to own a car.

But then, you appear to be one of those folk that tries to cheap out on anything essential for their car

so if someone disagrees with you, you call them a troll!

and then have the audacity to tell me to watch my tone

everyone on this planet is different, which makes the world an interesting place.

the only reason I have just acquired the Audi A3 1.6TDi was because it is the greenest car in its class.

the emissions and MPG are very attractive.

you may have an Audi for completely different reason.

and reusing a perfectly good part are different to yours.

to me, it makes as much sense as changing a wheel nut every-time you change a wheel, they're only a couple of quid aswell

You didn't disagree with me - you never replied to my post.

You implied that those who change the sump plug bolt are 'lacking in knowledge' - one should not throw stones in glass houses.

I don't own an Audi and a lot of the time, I'm thankful for that.

on the newer models only the oil reminder can be reset via the dash, the service indicator requires VCDS
