I've got a Mk5 Golf 1.4 TSi sport and I'm contemplating getting sat nav after getting rather lost yesterday!

I can buy the Factory fit unit (the latest dvd one that will also play audio CD's) with an antennae for £500 or the other option is the new Tom Tom 720 (I think that is the model!!) for about £300...

I'm not sure how easy it is to retro fit a factory unit, has anyone done it?

    Thanks

    I'd go for a Tomtom.

Less money to buy, no installation, easy and cheap to update maps and software, you can use it in any car and take it on holidays, generally better att round that built in units....
Only bad point is that built in units are really convenient as you dont have to stick it on the winscreen whenever you want to use it.
I have a tomtom 700 and an A6 with sat nav built in........Tomtom every time.

I have a Nokia N80 and have been using TomTom for about a year now.

    I couldn't do without it.

The TomTom is so versatile, search by postcode, town, navigate by quickest, shortest and by avoiding motorways.

When you hear on the radio that the motorway is shafted, then get TomTom to avoid that part of the route, or tell it that there is a block in 100 yards, 1/2 mile, 1mile or 3 miles.

Or fancy a mcdonalds on the way back, then tell TomTom to navigate via MaccyD's

    It's brilliant

The time it says I will arrive anywhere is always spot on, unless there is a traffic jam somewhere, which is nearly all the time on the M1 and M25 at the mo.

I have a Nokia GPS receiver for my N80 and it always picks up a signal quickly and is very reliable. It also uses the same charger as my N80

I thought that this set up would be far cheaper than the factory fit, more versatile, as i can take it with me when walking about the place, and it means i have ONE device cluttering up my beautiful dashboard instead of multiple devices.

ask away and i'll let you know model numbers and prices etc even photo's.

The N80's screen is plenty big enough as well. I also have John Cleese telling me when to go

Yup, just to add that I also use Tom Tom on my old phone. It's a very old Nokia 6600.

You just need additional bluetooth GPS reciever wich is slightly bigger than a matchbox. About £40 on eBay

The TomTom version I have is quite old and only uses 6 digit postcode, you then have to select the exat street, but still does the job.

Your phone wil still be able to recieve calls whilst TomTom is active.
