Hi i am new to here and hope someone can help.
ive just bought a vw golf 1.6 mk4 for my son that's in amazing condition for its year, the previous owner says it needs a new water pump as it keeps overheating.
ive search Google for a guide to do it as cant afford to take to garage, but Ive had no luck.
is this a simple operation to do and does anyone know of any online guides that will show me how to do it.
    many thanks john

It's not too difficult on these cars, you might as well change the timing belt and tensioner when you're doing the pump. you can get them at a fair price from GSF Car Parts | Discount Car Parts & Cheap Car Spares . If you aren't sure how to do the job get Haynes manual useful for this type of car VW GOLF BORA 1.4 1.6 1.8 2.0 PETROL 1.9 DIESEL 01-03 (X TO 53 REG) HAYNES MANUAL | eBay. Allow about £100 and 3-4 hours for the job. Replace coolant when youre done

As Doctle says, it is advisable to do the timing belt while you are at it, depending on the cars mileage, year and history,
In my experience, it is advisable to do the water pump when changing the belts as the water pump access is behind the belts.
Last time I got the belts/pump replaced by my mechanic it cost £300.. If you are confident enough and know what you are doing there is a fair amount of money to be saved.

    Good luck !
